Class 6 – Week 3

Soooo, this week I’ve been wrapping up the polish for the “Murderess” and “Ruaj” shots. Most of the time I’ve been trying to make the face more organic and connected, and I’ve also pushed some expressions so that they were easier to read. Furthermore, I found the line that will be my new animation. My mentor wanted me to do something very very physical, and I feel that this line has plenty of room for that. You can listen to it at the end of the .mov file. I’ll be back next week with some more polish for other shots, and the videoreference and planning for the new one, which will be called “Raid!”
Esta semana he estado finiquitando el polish para las animaciones de “Murderess” y “Ruaj”. La mayor parte del tiempo he estado trabajando en hacer que la cara esté más conectada, y también en exagerar expresiones para que se lean mejor. Además, he encontrado la nueva línea de diálogo con la que trabajaré mi próxima animación. Mi mentor quería que hiciese algo muy físico, y creo que esta línea tiene mucho espacio para eso. Podéis escucharla al final de estas dos animaciones. Volveré la semana que viene con más polish para otras animaciones, y con la videorerefencia y el planning para la nueva, que se llamará “Redada”.

Class 6 – Week 1

I look back at these 18 months of adventures at Animation Mentor and I cannot believe that this is coming to an end… Mmmmm, ok, I cannot start my first post for Class 6 in this depressing tone! We are in Class 6! EVERYBODY DANCE NOW!
So basically, this term consists of polishing and adding the last 10% (or in some cases the last 90%) to our shots to really make them shine and end up with a great showreel, which we will use to look for jobs! My mentor for this amazing term is Jason Taylor. I am super excited to be in his class as he has worked in one of my favourite films (Horton hears a who!) and in one of my favourite studios and where I would love to work someday (Blur).
Without further ado, this week we had to submit all the shots we had been working on in Classes 2, 3, 4 and 5, so that our mentors can tell us which shots they want us to focus on. And tomorrow, our 10-week polishing marathon shall begin! Let’s rock, ANIMATORS!
Miro atrás a estos 18 meses de aventuras en Animation Mentor y no puedo creer que estén llegando a su fin… Mmmmmm, ok, no puedo empezar mi primer post para la Class 6 en este tono tan depresivo. ¡Estamos en Class 6! EVERYBODY DANCE NOW!
Básicamente, este trimestre consiste en pulir y añadir el último 10% (o en algunas ocasiones el último 90%) a nuestras animaciones para hacerlas brillar y tener una gran showreel que usaremos para buscar trabajo. Mi mentor para este trimestre es Jason Taylor. Estoy muy contento de estar en su clase ya que ha trabajado en una de mis películas preferidas (Horton hears a who!) y en uno de mis estudios favoritos y dónde me encantaría trabajar algún día (Blur).
Sin más dilación, esta semana hemos tenido que enviar todas nuestras tomas con las que hemos estado trabajando en las clases 2, 3, 4 y 5, para que nuestros mentores nos digan cuáles son en las que quieren que nos centremos. Y mañana, ¡nuestra maratón de 10 semanas de pulir comenzará! ¡A por todas, ANIMATORS!

Class 5 – Week 3

Final pass for the murderess shot! This week I have been polishing the brows, lids, eye darts and some small details here and there to really make this shot shine. It’s been my first dialogue shot and I’m quite happy with it though I feel there is a lot of room for improvement! Now it’s time to look for the next audios with two characters in them and get ready for our next animation, which will be the last one at Animation Mentor. I will be posting my audio choices here soon! Take care!
¡Pase final de la animación! Esta semana he estado puliendo las cejas, los párpados, los movimientos de los ojos y algunos pequeños detalles aquí y allá para que la toma quedara mejor. Ha sido mi primera animación de un diálogo y estoy bastante contento con ella aunque todavía hay mucho dónde se puede mejorar. Ahora toca buscar los siguientes audios con dos personajes en ellos y prepararnos para la próxima animación, que será la última en Animation Mentor. ¡Publicaré aquí mis elecciones de audios próximamente!

Class 5 – Week 2

This term is soooooooooooo awesome! I’m loving it! My mentor, Michelle, is really really nice and she has given me a lot of advice to keep on improving my shot. This week we have been working on looking for some photographs with expressive faces so that later we could practise translating those to our character, Bishop. For me it has been one of the most engaging assignments ever because it’s really really interesting to study the facial features in order to transmit the same emotion. Here you have the ones that I did.
¡Este trimestre es geniaaaaaaal! ¡Me está encantando! Mi mentor, Michelle, es muy muy simpática y me ha dado un montón de consejos para seguir mejorando mi animación. Esta semana hemos estado trabajando en buscar fotografías con caras expresivas para que más tarde podamos practicar copiando esas expresiones a nuestro personaje, Bishop. Para mi ha sido uno de los ejercicios más interesantes porque es muy curioso estudiar las facciones faciales para conseguir que transmita tu personaje la misma emoción. ¡Aquí tenéis las que he hecho para esta semana!
Furthermore, I have been working on polishing and adding some more tweaks to my shot. Michelle came up with some great ideas for the beginning in order to make her much more feminine, so as you can see I’ve tweaked some poses there. I’ve also added weight to the jaw and lids and refined the lip sync a tiny bit more.

También he estado puliendo y añadiendo algunos retoques a la animación. Michelle me dijo unas cuantas ideas para cambiar el comienzo de la toma y que el personaje fuera mucho más femenino, por ello como podéis ver he cambiado algunas poses al principio. También he añadido peso al a mandíbula y a los párpados y he refinado el lip-sync un poco más.

Class 4 – Week 11

Polish pass for the “Murderess” shot! This week we have been working on retweaking all the body movements in our animations. I’ve been focusing mainly on making the walk feel more natural and less exaggerated and tying everything up so that there wasn’t too much dirty animation around. Although the lids, eyes, and mouth are animated a little bit, it’s just a very basic pass as we will do all the facial animation for this shot the first three weeks in Class 5.
And yeah! We are finished with Class 4! Woooohoooooo! Next week I’ll update my progress reel and I’ll have a well-deserved break before I get started with the FUNNIEST term of them all! Advanced Acting! I cannot waaaaaaaaaaaait!
Pase de pulido para la toma de “Murderess”. Esta semana hemos estado retocando todos los movimientos corporales en nuestras animaciones. Principalmente, yo me he centrado en hacer el andar más natural y menos exagerado y en atar bien todo para que no hubiera demasiada “animación sucia”. Aunque los párpados, los ojos y la boca están animados un poco, es simplemente un pase muy básico ya que trabajaremos toda la animación facial las tres primeras semanas de la Clase 5.
¡Y sí! ¡Hemos acabado con la Clase 4! ¡Woooohoooooo! La semana que viene actualizaré mi progress reel y tendré un merecido descanso antes de que empecemos con el MÁS DIVERTIDO trimestre de todos. ¡Acting avanzado! ¡No puedo esperaaaaaaar!

Class 4 – Week 10

There we goooooooo! One week left to finish off this shot, which sometimes I believe that it’s looking great and some other times I hate it completely. I’m developing a very big love/hate relationship with this animation. We have been working on a SURPRISED hand pose as well.
Next week we will be quite busy because it’s the last one to finish our animation and then we’ll be done with Class 4! Next term will be very exciting! I can feel it!
¡Ahí vamos! Queda una semana para terminar esta toma, la cual a veces creo que está quedando bien y muchas otras la odio completamente. Estoy desarrollando una relación de odio/amor muy grande hacia ella. También hemos trabajado esta semana en una pose para una mano que expresara SORPRESA.
La semana que viene estaremos bastante ocupados pues es la última para finalizar nuestra animación y después habremos acabado con la Clase 4. ¡El próximo trimestre va a ser muy interesante! ¡Lo presiento!

Class 4 – Week 9

Week 9? What the heck are you talking about? Wow, I think this is going faster every new week, I can’t believe that in 2 weeks this term will be over. Any way, let’s keep working! This week I finally completed the set for my shot, which consisted of the famous car with the bullet holes and some outdoor party stuff. I’ve also added some breakdowns and switched to splines. I haven’t had enough time to keep on refining it, so tons of work for next week!
Besides, we worked on a hand pose that had to convey a RELAXED state of mind for our character.

¿Semana 9? ¿De qué demonios estás hablando? Wow, creo que esto cada vez va más rápido, no me puedo creer que en dos semanas se habrá acabado ya este trimestre. Sea como sea, ¡a seguir trabajando! Esta semana he completado finalmente el set para mi animación, que consistía en el famoso coche con los agujeros de bala y cosas para una fiesta en un exterior. También he añadido más breakdowns y cambiado a splines. No he tenido mucho tiempo para refinarlo todo, así que mucho trabajo para la semana que viene.
También trabajamos en una pose para una mano que tenía que transmitir que nuestro personaje estaba RELAJADO.

Class 4 – Week 8

We’re back into action! With no more jet lag, I have managed to finish a proper blocking pass as the one for last week was quite incomplete and my mentor didn’t like it at all. Regarding Melanie, my mentor, she had to leave AM due to some family issues and I have a new mentor for the rest of the term. His name is Jamy Wheless and he has animated in films such as Star Wars, Hulk, Pirates or Transformers to name a few. I hope I’ll learn a lot from him in the next four weeks!
Here you have my blocking pass! My main goal with this shot is to show that she is really casual about something that has happened to her which is not casual at all. Let me know what you think!
¡De nuevo en acción! Sin jet lag, he podido terminar un decente pase de blocking ya que el de la semana pasada era bastante incompleto y a mi mentora no le gustó nada de nada. En cuanto a Melanie, mi mentora, se ha tenido que ir de AM por problemas familiares y tengo un nuevo mentor para el resto del trimestre. Su nombre es Jamy Wheless y ha animado en películas cómo Star Wars, Hulk, Piratas del Caribe o Transformers por mencionar algunas. Espero aprender mucho de él en las próximas cuatro semanas.
Aquí os dejo el blocking. Mi objetivo principal con esta animación es mostrar que esta mujer actúa muy tranquila y despreocupada acerca de algo que le ha ocurrido que no es para estar así. ¡Decidme qué os parece!

Class 4 – Week 7

Hello thereeeeee! I’m back from beautiful Vancouver! What an awesome city! I have met tons and tons of interesting people, some of them were buddies from Animation Mentor that I had wanted to meet for a long long time! The parties have been great, the talks very inspiring and I have slept very little! I’ll try to write a post with some photos, or else you can have a look at them in Facebook!
Regarding my dialogue shot, I decided to go with number 3, Murderess. My mentor and all the professional animators I asked agreed that that one was the more interesting one, and though it may not be as funny as the Coffin one, it has more subtle acting and I can focus more on creating a personality rather than just animating a gag as the coffin one would have been.
Without further ado, here it’s my first blocking pass. I have only had a couple of hours to work on it due to my veeery long and exciting trip! However, I’ll work on it a lot next week! Let me know what you think.
¡Buenas! Estoy de vuelta de Vancouver. ¡Qué ciudad más increíble! He conocido montones de personas interesantes, algunas de ellas eran compañeros de Animation Mentor que llevaba mucho tiempo esperando conocer. Las fiestas han sido geniales, las charlas muy inspiradoras, y he dormido muy poco. Intentaré escribir un post con algunas fotos, o también podéis echarles un vistazo en Facebook.
En cuanto a mi animación del diálogo, decidí ir con el número 3, Murderess. Mi mentora y otros animadores profesionales a los que pregunté estuvieron de acuerdo en que ése sería el más interesante, y aunque tal vez no sea tan gracioso como el del Ataúd, tiene opciones para un acting más sutil y puedo concentrarme mejor en crear una personalidad más que en animar un gag como hubiera pasado con el del Ataúd.
Sin más dilación, aquí está mi primer pase del blocking. Sólo he tenido un par de horas para trabajar en él debido a mi largo y excitante viaje. Sin embargo, trabajaré en él mucho la semana que viene. ¡Decidme qué os parece!

Class 4 – Week 6

Hello everyone! As you know, I’m currently in beautiful Vancouver, Canada attending Siggraph so I don’t have much time to talk! This week we have been looking for audios, shooting our videoreference and drawing sketches! I like knowing the story of my characters and what’s going through their minds, so I even wrote a small backstory for them. You can read these in the sketchbook pages!
So now the hard decision comes, which one of these three should I animate? Comments are welcome! Thanks!
¡Hola a todos! Como sabéis, estoy actualmente en Vancouver, Canadá en la feria Siggraph, así que no tengo mucho tiempo para hablar. Esta semana hemos estado buscando audios, grabando nuestras videoreferencias y dibujando sketches. Me gusta conocer un poco de la historia de mis personajes y lo que pasa por sus mentes, así que escribí unas pequeñas historias para ellos también. Las podéis leer en las páginas de los sketchbooks.
