It’s done! After a very long, hard and exciting summer I can finally say that Class 4 is over. It’s been quite a tough term, assignments have been much more difficult and it was hard to deal with Siggraph and AM at the same time for two weeks, but I think I did pretty well back then!

Now I’ll have 10 days off until the 26th when I’ll be back for Class 5 – Advanced Acting with full energy! I can’t wait to see you all again in the campus!

Meanwhile, here you have my progress so far for my first year in the animation world!

¡Está hecho! Después de un largo, duro y excitante verano al final puedo decir que la Clase 4 ha terminado. Ha sido un trimestre duro, las animaciones han sido cada vez más difíciles y fue difícil coordinar Siggraph y AM a la vez durante aquellas dos semanas, pero creo que fue bastante bien.

Ahora tengo 10 días libres hasta el 26 cuando volveremos para la Clase 5 – Acting Avanzado con todas nuestras energías. ¡No puedo esperar a veros de nuevo en el campus!

Mientras tanto, aquí tenéis mi progreso de momento en este primer año en el mundo de la animación.

BANANAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! Erm… I mean… PROGRESS REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEL! Here it is! My first 9 months in the animation world! I’m very excited with my progress so far but this term I’ve come to the conclusion that I still have zillions of things to learn! I want to thank all my AM peers and my 3 awesome mentors: Dimos Vrysellas, Jay Davis and Shaun Freeman for all the help, encouragement and good laughs they have granted me this three terms! I can’t wait for the next 9 months of Animation Mentor… and… get ready because we are starting with ACTINGGGGGGGGGGGG! Here we go!

BANANAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! Emmm… quiero decir… PROGRESS REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEL! ¡Aquí están! Mis primeros 9 meses en el mundo de la animación. Estoy muy contento con el progreso que he hecho hasta el momento aunque he llegado a la conclusión de que todavía me quedan tropecientas cosas por aprender. Quiero agradecer a todos mis compañeros de AM y a mis tres mentores de momento: Dimos Vrysellas, Jay Davis y Shaun Freeman por toda la ayuda, aliento y buenas risas que me han brindado estos tres trimestres. No puedo esperar por los 9 meses siguientes de Animation Mentor… y… preparáos porque empezamos con ACTINGGGGGGGGG. ¡Allá vamos!

Animation Mentor is a 3D Character Animation degree that consists of 6 classes. Each class lasts for 3 months, therefore to complete the whole program it would take you at least 18 months. Those 6 terms are called: 1. Basic Foundations, 2. Phychology of Body Mechanics, 3. Advanced Body Mechanics, 4. Introduction to Acting, 5. Advanced Acting, and 6. Polishing and Portfolio.

Maya Springboard, the term I’ve just finished, is previous to Basic Foundations. Thus, I’ll be starting Basic Foundations on the 27th of September.

Creo que explicar como funciona una semana normal en Animation Mentor puede ser bastante interesante. De esta manera, podréis saber mejor a qué me dedico los siguientes meses y las diferentes partes en las que está dividido este curso.

Animation Mentor es un curso de animación de personajes 3D que consiste en 6 clases. Cada clase dura 3 meses, por lo tanto para completar el curso completo necesitas 18 meses. Esos 6 trimestres se llaman: 1. Bases, 2. Psicología de la mecánica del cuerpo, 3. Psicología avanzada de la mecánica del cuerpo, 4. Introducción al Acting, 5. Acting Avanzado y 6. Retoques y Portfolio.

Maya Springboard, el trimestre que acabo de terminar, es anterior al de Bases. Por lo tanto, empezaré Bases el 27 de Septiembre.

Secondly, each term is divided into 12 weeks. Each week starts on Sundays at 12pm and finishes the next Sunday at 12pm. That is the due hour for our assignments.

In each of those weeks we have to watch a Video Lecture which usually lasts for an hour and a half or two hours where successful animators teach us the “theory” of what we are dealing with that week in our assignments. Later on, we can continue watching other training videos and assignment videos and then we have to start planning our animation. On Wednesdays we have a Live Q&A with our mentor, which is a professional animator working in the industry and who helps us with all our doubts and questions about the assignment. Moreover, each week we have other Q&As like Technical Q&As, Office Hours Q&As and some weeks they invite animators from Pixar, ILM, Blue Sky, etc… to talk to us about their experiences in the production of different movies or videogames.

The most gripping and exciting thing about AM is not only the fact that you have to plan, create and polish as best as you can your animation before Sunday noon, but also the fact that you can comment and critique on your buddies’ work. Each student has a workspace which all the other students can see, watch and comment on. For instance, on Wednesdays, if I am pretty advanced with my animation and I want to receive comments from all my buddies inside AM I just have to upload a playblast to my Public Review section and they will post all their comments there. Later on, I’ll be able to use all those comments to keep improving my animation until I have to turn it in on Sunday. What is even more amazing is that though you may be in Class 1, you can watch and comment on all the students’ workspaces, it doesn’t matter if they are in Class 1, 4 or 6.

Cada trimestre está dividido en 12 semanas. Cada semana comienza los domingos a las 12pm y terminar el siguiente domingo a las 12 también. Esa es la hora final de entrega de los deberes.

En cada una de esas semanas tenemos que ver una “Lección online” que normalmente dura una hora y media o dos horas donde animadores profesionales nos enseñan la teoría de lo que vamos a tener que hacer esa semana en nuestras tareas. Después, podemos seguir viendo otros vídeos de entrenamiento y más tarde hay que empezar a planificar nuestra animación. Los miércoles tenemos una Q&A con nuestro mentor, que es un animador profesional trabajando en la industria y que nos ayuda con todas las dudas y preguntas acerca de nuestra tarea. Además, cada semana tenemos otras Q&As como Technical Q&As o Office Hours Q&As y algunas semanas invitan a animadores profesionales de Pixar, ILM, Blue Sky etc… para hablarnos de sus experiencias en la producción de diferentes películas o videojuegos.

La parte más interesante acerca de AM es el hecho de que no sólo  tienes que planear, crear y perfeccionar tanto como puedas tu animación antes de entregarla el domingo, sino también el hecho de que puedes comentar y criticar el trabajo de tus compañeros. Cada estudiante tiene un espacio de trabajo dentro de AM que todos los demás compañeros pueden ver y comentar. Por ejemplo, los miércoles, si estoy bastante avanzado con mi animación y quiero recibir críticas y comentarios de mis compañeros simplemente tengo que subir un vídeo a la sección de Public Review y ellos pondrán ahí sus comentarios. Más tarde, podré usar esos comentarios para seguir perfeccionando mi animación antes de que tenga que entregarla el domingo. Lo que es todavía más interesante es que aunque estés en la clase 1, puedes ver y comentar en TODOS los espacios de todos los estudiantes, independientemente de si están en la clase 1, 4 ó 6.

The following week, on Monday, your mentor uploads a personal ecritique of your assignment. This consists of a video in which your mentor has recorded himself correcting your assignment. He can even draw on top of what you have animated in order to correct your mistakes or to give you some advice. Furthermore, you can watch all the ecritiques from all the other students inside AM, so you not only learn from your ecritique but from everyone’s elses. Isn’t that great?

As you can imagine, you can spend tons of hours learning, not only animating your assignment but also critiquing your buddies’ ones and learning from other student’s ecritiques! I cannot wait to start Class 1!

This week I didn’t have too much time to animate or to sketch because I was in London! (best city ever!). However, this next week I’m going to sketch more and try to learn a little bit more about lighting! This next video is the Student Showcase 2010 where you have all the best pieces of this year!

La semana siguiente, el lunes, tu mentor sube una crítica personal de tus deberes. Esto consiste en un vídeo en el cuál tu mentor se ha grabado a sí mismo analizando tu tarea. Incluso puede dibujar encima de lo que tú has animado para corregir errores o darte algunos consejos. Lo que es más, es que puedes ver las críticas que todos los otros mentores han hecho a todos los otros estudiantes en AM, por lo tanto no sólo aprendes de tu mentor sino de todos los demás.

Como podréis imaginar, puedes pasarte un montón de horas aprendiendo, no sólo animando sino también criticando el trabajo de tus compañeros y aprendiendo de las críticas de otros. ¡Quiero empezar ya la clase 1!

Esta semana no tuve mucho tiempo para animar o haces sketches porque estaba en Londres (la mejor ciudad del planeta). Sin embargo, la siguiente semana voy a hacer más sketches y a intentar aprender un poco más acerca de iluminación.
