Class 4 – Week 9

Week 9? What the heck are you talking about? Wow, I think this is going faster every new week, I can’t believe that in 2 weeks this term will be over. Any way, let’s keep working! This week I finally completed the set for my shot, which consisted of the famous car with the bullet holes and some outdoor party stuff. I’ve also added some breakdowns and switched to splines. I haven’t had enough time to keep on refining it, so tons of work for next week!
Besides, we worked on a hand pose that had to convey a RELAXED state of mind for our character.

¿Semana 9? ¿De qué demonios estás hablando? Wow, creo que esto cada vez va más rápido, no me puedo creer que en dos semanas se habrá acabado ya este trimestre. Sea como sea, ¡a seguir trabajando! Esta semana he completado finalmente el set para mi animación, que consistía en el famoso coche con los agujeros de bala y cosas para una fiesta en un exterior. También he añadido más breakdowns y cambiado a splines. No he tenido mucho tiempo para refinarlo todo, así que mucho trabajo para la semana que viene.
También trabajamos en una pose para una mano que tenía que transmitir que nuestro personaje estaba RELAJADO.

Class 4 – Week 8

We’re back into action! With no more jet lag, I have managed to finish a proper blocking pass as the one for last week was quite incomplete and my mentor didn’t like it at all. Regarding Melanie, my mentor, she had to leave AM due to some family issues and I have a new mentor for the rest of the term. His name is Jamy Wheless and he has animated in films such as Star Wars, Hulk, Pirates or Transformers to name a few. I hope I’ll learn a lot from him in the next four weeks!
Here you have my blocking pass! My main goal with this shot is to show that she is really casual about something that has happened to her which is not casual at all. Let me know what you think!
¡De nuevo en acción! Sin jet lag, he podido terminar un decente pase de blocking ya que el de la semana pasada era bastante incompleto y a mi mentora no le gustó nada de nada. En cuanto a Melanie, mi mentora, se ha tenido que ir de AM por problemas familiares y tengo un nuevo mentor para el resto del trimestre. Su nombre es Jamy Wheless y ha animado en películas cómo Star Wars, Hulk, Piratas del Caribe o Transformers por mencionar algunas. Espero aprender mucho de él en las próximas cuatro semanas.
Aquí os dejo el blocking. Mi objetivo principal con esta animación es mostrar que esta mujer actúa muy tranquila y despreocupada acerca de algo que le ha ocurrido que no es para estar así. ¡Decidme qué os parece!

Class 4 – Week 7

Hello thereeeeee! I’m back from beautiful Vancouver! What an awesome city! I have met tons and tons of interesting people, some of them were buddies from Animation Mentor that I had wanted to meet for a long long time! The parties have been great, the talks very inspiring and I have slept very little! I’ll try to write a post with some photos, or else you can have a look at them in Facebook!
Regarding my dialogue shot, I decided to go with number 3, Murderess. My mentor and all the professional animators I asked agreed that that one was the more interesting one, and though it may not be as funny as the Coffin one, it has more subtle acting and I can focus more on creating a personality rather than just animating a gag as the coffin one would have been.
Without further ado, here it’s my first blocking pass. I have only had a couple of hours to work on it due to my veeery long and exciting trip! However, I’ll work on it a lot next week! Let me know what you think.
¡Buenas! Estoy de vuelta de Vancouver. ¡Qué ciudad más increíble! He conocido montones de personas interesantes, algunas de ellas eran compañeros de Animation Mentor que llevaba mucho tiempo esperando conocer. Las fiestas han sido geniales, las charlas muy inspiradoras, y he dormido muy poco. Intentaré escribir un post con algunas fotos, o también podéis echarles un vistazo en Facebook.
En cuanto a mi animación del diálogo, decidí ir con el número 3, Murderess. Mi mentora y otros animadores profesionales a los que pregunté estuvieron de acuerdo en que ése sería el más interesante, y aunque tal vez no sea tan gracioso como el del Ataúd, tiene opciones para un acting más sutil y puedo concentrarme mejor en crear una personalidad más que en animar un gag como hubiera pasado con el del Ataúd.
Sin más dilación, aquí está mi primer pase del blocking. Sólo he tenido un par de horas para trabajar en él debido a mi largo y excitante viaje. Sin embargo, trabajaré en él mucho la semana que viene. ¡Decidme qué os parece!

Class 4 – Week 6

Hello everyone! As you know, I’m currently in beautiful Vancouver, Canada attending Siggraph so I don’t have much time to talk! This week we have been looking for audios, shooting our videoreference and drawing sketches! I like knowing the story of my characters and what’s going through their minds, so I even wrote a small backstory for them. You can read these in the sketchbook pages!
So now the hard decision comes, which one of these three should I animate? Comments are welcome! Thanks!
¡Hola a todos! Como sabéis, estoy actualmente en Vancouver, Canadá en la feria Siggraph, así que no tengo mucho tiempo para hablar. Esta semana hemos estado buscando audios, grabando nuestras videoreferencias y dibujando sketches. Me gusta conocer un poco de la historia de mis personajes y lo que pasa por sus mentes, así que escribí unas pequeñas historias para ellos también. Las podéis leer en las páginas de los sketchbooks.

Class 4 – Week 5

There we go! Final pass of Stewie, the commander! This week has been pretty tough as not only have I polished my pantomime shot but I also had to reshoot my videoreference for next week and get the sketches ready for my first dialogue shot. I say reshoot because I had already recorded some videoreference two weeks ago but I didn’t like it very much, so I kept on exploring more ideas. And you may be wondering, why are you doing the work of two weeks in one? Because next week I’m going to VANCOUVEEEEEEEEEEER! And I really want to have some free days in order to visit the city and meet a lot of friends!
I’ll keep you posted on my adventures over there, though you can follow them through Facebook as well. Take care and I hope you enjoy this final pass!
¡Listo! Pase final para Stewie, el comandante. Esta semana ha sido bastante dura pues no sólo he tenido que pulir mi toma de pantomima sino que también he tenido que regrabar mi videoreferencia para la semana que viene y preparar los sketches de mi primer diálogo. Digo regrabar, porque ya grabé algo de videoreferencia hace dos semanas pero no me convencía mucho así que seguí explorando más ideas, ¡muy importante en animación! Y tal vez os estéis preguntando porqué hago los deberes de dos semanas en una. Porque la semana que viene me voy a VANCOUVEEEEEEEEEEEEEER! Y realmente quiero tener algunos días libres para visitar la ciudad y conocer a muchos amigos.
Os mantendré al tanto de mis aventuras allí, aunque también las podéis seguir mejor por Facebook. ¡Cuídense y espero que os guste el pase final!

Class 4 – Week 4

Tons of work this week! Not only have I kept on working on my current shot, but as I’m going to Siggraph, I have been already shooting video reference and playing with some ideas for the next one.
Regarding this shot, Melanie gave me a lot of comments to tweak this week, and I think it’s looking much better! She mentioned that Stewie’s spine was a bit too locked, and that he should have more movement in there. I fixed some problems with the body mechanics of the stomp and of the step forward as well, and added all the remaining frames at the end.
Next week is the last one to polish this shot! And then… WE GET OUR NEW CHARACTER! BISHOP! I can’t wait!
¡Mucho trabajo esta semana! No sólo he tenido que seguir trabajando en mi toma actual, pero cómo voy a ir a Siggraph, también he grabado video referencia y probado diferentes ideas para la próxima animación.
Acerca de esta toma, Melanie me dio muchos comentarios en los que trabajar, y creo que está mucho mejor. Mencionó que el torso de Stewie tenía poco movimiento y parecía que estaba bloqueado en el mismo sitio, para ello añadí un poco más de movimiento ahí. También arreglé algunos problemas con la mecánica del golpe con el pie en el suelo y cuando da el paso hacia el frente. Finalmente, trabajé en los frames que quedaban sin hacer al final.
La semana que viene es la última para pulir esta toma. Y después… ¡NOS DAN NUESTRO NUEVO PERSONAJE, BISHOP! ¡No puedo esperar!

Class 4 – Week 3

Hello there! This week I’ve been working on splining the first 200 frames of my shot. I’ve kept the last 50 for next week, as I had to tweak some poses there and I want to know my mentor’s opinion before I keep on adding breakdowns. There are still quite a few things to tweak, but I’m quite happy with what I have so far!

¡Buenas! Esta semana he estado trabajando en pasar a splines los primeros 200 fotogramas de la animación. He dejado los últimos 50 para la semana que viene, ya que tenía que retocar unas cuantas poses ahí y quería saber la opinión de mi mentora antes de seguir añadiendo más breakdowns. Todavía hay unas cuantas cosas que retocar, pero estoy bastante contento con lo que llevo de momento.

Class 4 – Week 2

I loved this week! I have had tons of fun blocking out this shot. Acting is so so much harder than the previous terms. Up to this point, we didn’t have to worry too much about personality and contrast, but with this new shot, not only did we have to make sure that the body mechanics were working, but the personality and the beats had to be very clear! Nevertheless, the more challenging something is, the more I love it!
¡Me ha encantado esta semana! Me lo he pasado genial haciendo el blocking de esta toma. Acting es mucho mucho más difícil que los trimestres anteriores. Hasta este punto, no teníamos que preocuparnos acerca de la personalidad y de crear contraste, pero con esta nueva toma, no sólo tenemos que asegurarnos que los movimientos del cuerpo tienen lógica, sino que la personalidad y los puntos fuertes son muy claros y están presentes. De todas maneras, cuanto más desafiante es algo, ¡más me gusta!
Melanie, my new mentor, loved the idea and suggested that I should cut out the walk at the beginning. Besides, I’ve tried cartoony animation for the first time ever and I’m planning on giving this piece a very snappy feeling towards its end. In class, we analysed a clip of “Some like it hot!” and I’m posting here my favourite part of the movie! Let me know what you guys think! See you next week!
A Melanie, mi nueva mentora, le encantó la idea y sugirió que quitara cuando camina al principio. Además, he probado a animar cartoony animation por primera vez y estoy planeando en darle un timing muy snappy para el final, como podéis ver. En clase, analizamos un clip de “Con faldas y a lo loco” y os pongo aquí mi parte favorita de la película. ¡Decidme qué os parece! ¡Nos vemos la semana que viene!

Class 4 – Week 1

We are BACK! And now, it’s when the fun begins as we are starting Introduction to Acting! This term we are going to have to work on two shots only. The first one, which I’ve been planning this week, is a pantomime shot that has to show the change and contrast between two different emotions. I have been exploring different ideas and I decided that the best one was number 1. You can watch all three ideas I worked on right here.
¡Estamos de vuelta! Y ahora, es cuando comienza lo bueno ya que empezamos la Introducción al Acting. En este trimestre vamos a tener que trabajar sólo en dos tomas. La primera, la cual he estado planeando esta semana, es una pantomima en la cual se tiene que mostrar el cambio y el contraste entre dos emociones diferentes. He estado explorando diferentes ideas y he decidido que la mejor es la número 1. Podéis ver las tres ideas en las que he trabajado aquí mismo.
I studied my videoreference and prepared the stage and planning sketches to better analyze the action and what was going on in the shot. Planning is veeeeeeery very important for animation!
Estudié mi videoreferencia y preparé el escenario y los sketches de planificación para analizar mejor los movimientos y lo que ocurría. ¡Preparar tus tomas antes de lanzarse al ordenador es muy muuuuy importante!
Last but not least, my mentor for this amazing term will be Melanie Cordan. She has worked in movies such as Toy Story 2, How to train your dragon, Robots, Shrek 3, Kung Fu Panda 2 and many more, so I’m sure I will learn a ton with her! I’ll have to wake up all Wednesdays at 5am for her Q&As but it’s no biggie!
I’ll be back next week with the blocking for Stewie, the Commander!
Por último, mi mentora para este trimestre será Melanie Cordan. Ha trabajado en películas como Toy Story 2, Cómo entrenar a tu dragón, Robots, Shrek 3, Kung Fu Panda 2 y muchas más, así que estoy seguro de que aprenderé mucho con ella. Tendré que despertarme todos los miércoles a las 5am para sus clases pero estoy seguro que merecerá la pena.
