Class 6 – Week 5

Craziest shot ever! Wow, cartoony animation is so much fun! Here you have the first 140 frames for the blocking pass of my new shot. I’ve been doing a lot of experimenting with Flipbook and then translating it into Maya to see what worked. Next week I’ll work on the rest and refine what I already have.
¡Qué locura! Hacer animaciones estilo cartoony es muy entretenido. Aquí tenéis los primeros 140 fotogramas del blocking pass para la nueva animación. He estado experimentando mucho con Flipbook y trasladándolo después a Maya para ver si funcionaba. La semana que viene trabajaré en el resto y refinaré lo que ya tengo.

Class 6 – Week 4

Uffff! What a week! Tons to do! So, I’ve started planning my new shot. As I don’t have any cartoony acting shots I decided to give it a go and try to animate this one in that style. To do that, I’ve drawn a pencil test in order to experiment with poses, timing and spacing. I’m not quite convinced yet, so I’ll keep working on it next week and do a first blocking pass.
¡Vaya semana! ¡Mucho qué hacer! Esta semana he estado planificando mi próxima animación. Cómo no tengo ninguna animación de acting estilo cartoony, he decidido darle una oportunidad y probar a animar ésta en ese estilo. Para ello, he dibujado un pequeño pencil test y así he podido experimentar con poses, timing y spacing. Todavía no estoy muy convencido, así que seguiré trabajando en él la semana que viene además de hacer un primer pase de blocking.

Class 6 – Week 3

Soooo, this week I’ve been wrapping up the polish for the “Murderess” and “Ruaj” shots. Most of the time I’ve been trying to make the face more organic and connected, and I’ve also pushed some expressions so that they were easier to read. Furthermore, I found the line that will be my new animation. My mentor wanted me to do something very very physical, and I feel that this line has plenty of room for that. You can listen to it at the end of the .mov file. I’ll be back next week with some more polish for other shots, and the videoreference and planning for the new one, which will be called “Raid!”
Esta semana he estado finiquitando el polish para las animaciones de “Murderess” y “Ruaj”. La mayor parte del tiempo he estado trabajando en hacer que la cara esté más conectada, y también en exagerar expresiones para que se lean mejor. Además, he encontrado la nueva línea de diálogo con la que trabajaré mi próxima animación. Mi mentor quería que hiciese algo muy físico, y creo que esta línea tiene mucho espacio para eso. Podéis escucharla al final de estas dos animaciones. Volveré la semana que viene con más polish para otras animaciones, y con la videorerefencia y el planning para la nueva, que se llamará “Redada”.

Class 6 – Week 2

Soooooo, second week of the last term! This week I have been polishing in depth a lot of different things in the Ruaj shot. I really didn’t know that I could still add and tweak so many details in it, and I’m sure there is a lot to be done. I have finally animated the ponytail for the girl, refined the lipsync more, worked on the physicality of the slap, pushed more the sad emotions for the girl (2nd shot), shaped the lids making them much more connected to the pupil, tracked arcs for basically every single part of the body and worked on the guy’s gestures. Tons of things!
My mentor wants me to polish all the shots that I have done in Animation Mentor except for two, and I completely agree with his decision. As well, I’m going to start a new shot involving a lot of body mechanics! Stay tuned!
¡Segunda semana del último trimestre! Esta semana he estado puliendo en profundidad diferentes cosas en la animación de Ruaj. La verdad es que no sabía que todavía podía añadir y modificar tantos pequeños detalles, y estoy seguro que todavía hay mucho por hacer. Finalmente he animado la coleta de la chica, he pulido el lipsync, trabajado en la bofetada, exagerado las emociones tristes de la chica en la segunda toma, dado forma a los párpados y asegurado que están más conectados a la pupila, trackeado los arcos para cada parte del cuerpo y trabaado en los gestos del chico. ¡Muchas cosas!
Mi mentor quiere que pula todas las tomas que he hecho en Animation Mentor excepto dos, y estoy completamente de acuerdo con su decisión. Además, voy a empezar una nueva toma en la que estarán envueltos muchos body mechanics.

Class 6 – Week 1

I look back at these 18 months of adventures at Animation Mentor and I cannot believe that this is coming to an end… Mmmmm, ok, I cannot start my first post for Class 6 in this depressing tone! We are in Class 6! EVERYBODY DANCE NOW!
So basically, this term consists of polishing and adding the last 10% (or in some cases the last 90%) to our shots to really make them shine and end up with a great showreel, which we will use to look for jobs! My mentor for this amazing term is Jason Taylor. I am super excited to be in his class as he has worked in one of my favourite films (Horton hears a who!) and in one of my favourite studios and where I would love to work someday (Blur).
Without further ado, this week we had to submit all the shots we had been working on in Classes 2, 3, 4 and 5, so that our mentors can tell us which shots they want us to focus on. And tomorrow, our 10-week polishing marathon shall begin! Let’s rock, ANIMATORS!
Miro atrás a estos 18 meses de aventuras en Animation Mentor y no puedo creer que estén llegando a su fin… Mmmmmm, ok, no puedo empezar mi primer post para la Class 6 en este tono tan depresivo. ¡Estamos en Class 6! EVERYBODY DANCE NOW!
Básicamente, este trimestre consiste en pulir y añadir el último 10% (o en algunas ocasiones el último 90%) a nuestras animaciones para hacerlas brillar y tener una gran showreel que usaremos para buscar trabajo. Mi mentor para este trimestre es Jason Taylor. Estoy muy contento de estar en su clase ya que ha trabajado en una de mis películas preferidas (Horton hears a who!) y en uno de mis estudios favoritos y dónde me encantaría trabajar algún día (Blur).
Sin más dilación, esta semana hemos tenido que enviar todas nuestras tomas con las que hemos estado trabajando en las clases 2, 3, 4 y 5, para que nuestros mentores nos digan cuáles son en las que quieren que nos centremos. Y mañana, ¡nuestra maratón de 10 semanas de pulir comenzará! ¡A por todas, ANIMATORS!

Class 5 – Week 12 – Progress Reel

Here it is! My updated progress reel with all the animations I’ve worked on for the last 15 months. Wow, I can’t believe I’ve already been for 15 months in Animation Mentor and there are only 3 left. Nevertheless, I bet there are a lot of adventures waiting for us out there once we are finished.
I wanted to take this opportunity once again to say thank you to all my classmates and friends who have helped and encouraged me throughout this amazing journey so far. I can’t wait to be back and share the last 3 months with all of you! In the meantime, let’s enjoy our break! Happy 2012!
¡Aquí está! Mi portfolio actualizado con todas las animaciones en las que he trabajado estos últimos 15 meses. Wow, no puedo creer que haya estado ya 15 meses en Animation Mentor y que sólo queden 3. Sin embargo, apuesto que hay muchísimas más aventuras esperándonos ahí afuera una vez hayamos acabado.
Quiero aprovechar esta oportunidad una vez más para agradecer a todos mis compañeros y amigos que me han ayudado y apoyado a lo largo de esta increíble experiencia. No puedo esperar a estar de vuelta y compartir los últimos 3 meses con todos vosotros. Mientras tanto, ¡disfrutemos del descanso! ¡Feliz 2012!

Class 5 – Week 11

That’s it! Teeeeerm is over! I can officially say now that this has been the best term ever in our adventure in Animation Mentor. I’ve learnt a lot of the ins and outs of how to animate two characters at the same time and I’m a master now at slapping people, so… beware! This week we have been giving the last-minute details to our animations.
Next week we’ll upload our updated reels and then we’ll have our deserved Christmas break! Thanks everyone for your continuous support and comments!
¡Se acabó! ¡El trimestre está finiquitado! Ahora puedo decir oficialmene que este ha sido el mejor trimestre en nuestra aventura en Animation Mentor. He aprendido un montón acerca de cómo animar dos personajes a la vez y ahora soy un maestro de abofetear a la gente, así que… ¡cuidado! Esta semana hemos estado dando retoques de última hora a nuestras animaciones.
La semana que viene subiremos nuestras reels actualizadas y después tendremos nuestro merecido descanso de Navidad. ¡Gracias a todos por vuestro apoyo continuo y por vuestros comentarios!

Class 5 – Week 10

We’re almost at the end of this amazing term! This week I’ve been focusing on the “bermuda triangle”, which is the part of the face where the eyes, brows and nose are. It is one of the most important sections to polish because the audience will be looking there almost all the time! The face has to feel connected, brows have to affect lids, and lids have to affect eyes.
Other than that, I’ve been tying up some parts of the body to give them a smoother or a snappier timing and polishing some little things. Next week is the last one for this assignment! The marathon starts noooooooooow!
Estamos casi al final de este trimestre increíble. Esta semana he estado centrado en el “triángulo de las bermudas”, que es la parte de la cara donde están los ojos, las cejas y la nariz. Es una de las zonas más importantes que pulir pues el público estará mirando ahí casi todo el tiempo. La cara tiene que estar conectada, las cejas tienen que afectar a los párpados, y los párpados tienen que afectar a los ojos.
Además de eso, he estado fijando algunas partes del cuerpo para que tuvieran un timing más suave o snappier, y puliendo algunos pequeños detalles. La semana que viene es la última para esta animación. ¡El maraton comienza ya!

Class 5 – Week 9

Another week is over and in the next two I have tons to do to push this shot to the next level! This week I haven’t had as much time as I wanted to in order to refine my shot more. I’ve been working on the gesture Max does when he says “I have tons of ruaj” and I’ve kept on adding more details into the facial animation.
Next week I’ll start offsetting things and working on the arcs and the spacing. Let me know what you think!
Se acabó otra semana y en las próximas dos tengo mucho que hacer para mejorar esta animación lo máximo que pueda. Esta semana no tuve tanto tiempo como quería para refinar la animación más. He estado trabajando en el gesto que Max hace cuando dice “I have tons of ruaj” y también he añadido más detalles a la animación facial.
La semana que viene comenzaré a usar offsets y trabajaré en los arcos y en el spacing. ¡Decidme qué os parece!

Class 5 – Week 8

Tons of hard work this week! I’ve been working on the first facial pass for Ruaj! Animating the face is probably one of my favourite parts of the animation process because you can really go into detail and tweak mouth corners, cheeks, eyebrows and so on to build a great performance. This is only a first pass, there are still a lot of things to be adressed! Also, I’ve tweaked the slap a bit more and worked on the gestures for the guy in the third shot. Let me know what you think!
¡Mucho trabajo esta semana! He estado trabajando en el primer pase de animación para la cara. Animar la cara es probablemente una de mis partes favoritas del proceso de animación ya que puedes ir a cada detalle y retocar las esquinas de la boca, los mofletes, las cejas y más elementos para construir una gran actuación. Éste es sólo el primer pase, todavía quedan muchas cosas por hacer. También he modificado un poco la bofetada y trabajado en los gestos que hace el chico en la tercera toma. ¡Decidme qué os parece!
