Class 5 – Week 7

Another week is over and this has probably been one of the most demanding weeks ever! I bet it’s going to be this hard now until the end of this term. There is a lot to do when animating two complete characters at the same time.
This week I’ve been focusing on adding some more poses, I’ve moved to splines and now I’m tweaking some of the poses that I already have before starting offsetting things and going into the graph editor. Let me know what you think!
Otra semana se ha acabado y esta ha sido probablemente la más exigente de todas de momento. Estoy seguro de que esto va a llevar este ritmo hasta el final del trimestre. ¡Hay mucho que hacer cuando se animan dos personajes a la vez!
Esta semana he estado centrado en añadir más poses, he cambiado las curvas a splines y ahora estoy retocando algunas de las poses que tenía antes de empezar a poner offset y antes de ir al graph editor a retocar curvas. ¡Decidme qué os parece!

Class 5 – Week 6

Wooooow! Half the term is over! How did this happen? I don’t want this term to end… it’s so so much fun. Any way… this week we have been working on blocking out our dialogue shot. I’ve been paying very close attention to all the movements and beats I hit when I recorded my videoreference because I wanted to capture as much as possible. In fact, Michelle, our mentor, asked us to submit our assignments with the videoreference attached at the end. I’ve also added some details that I didn’t do in the videoreference and exaggerated the slap and some other spots. Let me know what you think!
Wooooooooooooooooow! ¡La mitad del trimestre ya ha volado! ¿Qué ha pasado? No quiero que este trimestre se acabe… es el mejor de todos. Esta semana hemos estado trabajando en el blocking de la animación. He estado prestando mucha atención a todos los movimientos que hacía cuando grabé mi videoreferencia ya que quería capturar tantos cómo fueran posibles. De hecho, Michelle, nuestra mentora, nos pidió que con nuestras animaciones enviáramos también la videoreferencia al final. También he añadido algunos detalles que no tenía hechos en la videoreferecia y he exagerado la bofetada y algunos otros puntos. ¡Decidme qué os parece!

Class 5 – Week 5

Yep! We have finally started with our last animation in Animation Mentor! I’m really excited about this last piece. It’s being a hilarious job animating this slap and all the facial expressions for the guy. This week, rather than diving into Maya from the beginning, we have been rerecording our videoreference, trying some new things and drawing out the usual sketches in order to study body movements and lipsync.
¡Sí! Ya hemos comenzado la última animación en Animation Mentor. Estoy particularmente emocionado con esta última pieza. Está siendo un trabajo desternillante animar esa bofetada y todas las expresiones faciales para el chico. Esta semana, más que lanzarnos a Maya desde el principio, hemos estado regrabando nuestra videoreferencia, probando cosas nuevas y dibujando los típicos sketches para estudiar los movimientos corporales y el lipsync.
Then, most of us have been creating a simple stage and some props for our characters to interact with. Moreover, we have set up a basic layout, which was the main objective for this week. The layout consists of setting up all the cameras, cuts, composition, distance and interaction between characters so that you make sure that’s the best way to tell the story before you start animating. Here you can have a look at my layout with some basic poses. And yeah, animating that slap is proving to be really really fun!
Después, la mayoría de nosotros hemos tenido que crear un pequeño decorado y algunos objetos con los que nuestros personajes van a interactuar y también configurar el layout, que era el principal objetivo de esta semana. El layout consiste en colocar todas las cámaras con sus cortes, cuidando la composición, la distancia y la interacción entre los diferentes personajes asegurándote de que esta es la mejor forma de contar la historia antes de comenzar a animar. Aquí podéis echar un vistazo a mi layout con algunas poses básicas. Y sí, ¡animar esa bofetada está resultando ser lo más divertido de todo!

Class 5 – Week 4

When this week started I was thinking that as I already had my 3 dialogue choices I wouldn’t have much to do… haha… no way! It’s been one of the busiest weeks ever! Our assignment this week consisted in choosing 3 different audios with two characters in them for our mentor to review. I had already found a bunch of them that I liked some weeks ago so with the help of my classmates I have narrowed them to the final three. In order to see how they would translate, I shot myself doing a very basic layout pass and in order to see how much I could push the acting and which audios had more possibilities. Here you can have a look at the audios and videoreferences. Which one is your favourite?
Cuando esta semana comenzó pensé que como ya tenía mis tres audios elegidos no tendría mucho que hacer… jaja… de ninguna manera… Ha sido una de las semanas más duras de todas. Nuestra tarea esta semana consistía en elegir 3 audios diferentes con dos personajes en ellos para que nuestro mentor los revisara. Yo ya tenía unos cuantos de ellos que me gustaban desde hacía unas semanas así que con la ayuda de mis compañeros de clase los reduje a los tres finales. Para ver qué tal funcionaban, me grabé haciendo un layout pass muy básico para ver hasta qué punto podía exagerar el acting y qué audios tenían más posibilidades. Aquí podéis echar un vistazo a los audios y a las videoreferencias. ¿Cuál es vuestra favorita?
Furthermore, we can animate now with Bishop 2.0! Aaaaaaaaaaawesome news! It’s basically the same character as the one for the previous shot, but now we can add clothes to it and modify his body/facial features. Here you can have a look at the character sheets for the three shots.
Además, ahora podemos animar con Bishop 2.0! ¡Son muy buenas noticias! Básicamente es el mismo personaje que en la toma anterior, pero ahora podemos añadir ropa y modificar su cuerpo y rasgos faciales. Aquí podéis echar un vistazo a las hojas de personajes para cada una de las tres ideas.

Class 5 – Week 3

Final pass for the murderess shot! This week I have been polishing the brows, lids, eye darts and some small details here and there to really make this shot shine. It’s been my first dialogue shot and I’m quite happy with it though I feel there is a lot of room for improvement! Now it’s time to look for the next audios with two characters in them and get ready for our next animation, which will be the last one at Animation Mentor. I will be posting my audio choices here soon! Take care!
¡Pase final de la animación! Esta semana he estado puliendo las cejas, los párpados, los movimientos de los ojos y algunos pequeños detalles aquí y allá para que la toma quedara mejor. Ha sido mi primera animación de un diálogo y estoy bastante contento con ella aunque todavía hay mucho dónde se puede mejorar. Ahora toca buscar los siguientes audios con dos personajes en ellos y prepararnos para la próxima animación, que será la última en Animation Mentor. ¡Publicaré aquí mis elecciones de audios próximamente!

Class 5 – Week 2

This term is soooooooooooo awesome! I’m loving it! My mentor, Michelle, is really really nice and she has given me a lot of advice to keep on improving my shot. This week we have been working on looking for some photographs with expressive faces so that later we could practise translating those to our character, Bishop. For me it has been one of the most engaging assignments ever because it’s really really interesting to study the facial features in order to transmit the same emotion. Here you have the ones that I did.
¡Este trimestre es geniaaaaaaal! ¡Me está encantando! Mi mentor, Michelle, es muy muy simpática y me ha dado un montón de consejos para seguir mejorando mi animación. Esta semana hemos estado trabajando en buscar fotografías con caras expresivas para que más tarde podamos practicar copiando esas expresiones a nuestro personaje, Bishop. Para mi ha sido uno de los ejercicios más interesantes porque es muy curioso estudiar las facciones faciales para conseguir que transmita tu personaje la misma emoción. ¡Aquí tenéis las que he hecho para esta semana!
Furthermore, I have been working on polishing and adding some more tweaks to my shot. Michelle came up with some great ideas for the beginning in order to make her much more feminine, so as you can see I’ve tweaked some poses there. I’ve also added weight to the jaw and lids and refined the lip sync a tiny bit more.

También he estado puliendo y añadiendo algunos retoques a la animación. Michelle me dijo unas cuantas ideas para cambiar el comienzo de la toma y que el personaje fuera mucho más femenino, por ello como podéis ver he cambiado algunas poses al principio. También he añadido peso al a mandíbula y a los párpados y he refinado el lip-sync un poco más.

Class 5 – Week 1

Exactly one year ago we were beginning our Animation Mentor journey dreaming of getting to the awesome Class 5… WAIT A SECOND! WE GOT THERE! WE ARE IN CLASS 5! This is going to be the toughest and most exciting term of our journey so we’d better make the best out of it!
This term we will finish the facial animation for the one-character dialogue and we will start our last shot in Animation Mentor which will include TWO characters! I think we are already going crazy looking for great dialogues to animate.

Hace justo un año estabamos empezando nuestra aventura en Animation Mentor soñando con llegar a la gran Clase 5… ¡ESPERA UN SEGUNDO! ¡HEMOS LLEGADO! ¡ESTAMOS EN LA CLASE 5! Este va a ser el trimestre más duro e interesante de nuestro viaje así que mejor que pongamos toda la carne en el asador.
Este trimestre vamos a acabar la animación facial del diálogo de un personaje y después empezaremos nuestra última animación en Animation Mentor que incluirá DOS personajes. Creo que ya nos estamos volviendo locos buscando buenos diálogos para animar.

My mentor for the new term is Michelle Meeker! She has worked in projects such as Lord of the Rings and Shrek! I’m sure I’m going to learn a lot from her!

Class 4 – Week 12 – Progress Reel

It’s done! After a very long, hard and exciting summer I can finally say that Class 4 is over. It’s been quite a tough term, assignments have been much more difficult and it was hard to deal with Siggraph and AM at the same time for two weeks, but I think I did pretty well back then!
Now I’ll have 10 days off until the 26th when I’ll be back for Class 5 – Advanced Acting with full energy! I can’t wait to see you all again in the campus!
Meanwhile, here you have my progress so far for my first year in the animation world!
¡Está hecho! Después de un largo, duro y excitante verano al final puedo decir que la Clase 4 ha terminado. Ha sido un trimestre duro, las animaciones han sido cada vez más difíciles y fue difícil coordinar Siggraph y AM a la vez durante aquellas dos semanas, pero creo que fue bastante bien.
Ahora tengo 10 días libres hasta el 26 cuando volveremos para la Clase 5 – Acting Avanzado con todas nuestras energías. ¡No puedo esperar a veros de nuevo en el campus!
Mientras tanto, aquí tenéis mi progreso de momento en este primer año en el mundo de la animación.

Class 4 – Week 11

Polish pass for the “Murderess” shot! This week we have been working on retweaking all the body movements in our animations. I’ve been focusing mainly on making the walk feel more natural and less exaggerated and tying everything up so that there wasn’t too much dirty animation around. Although the lids, eyes, and mouth are animated a little bit, it’s just a very basic pass as we will do all the facial animation for this shot the first three weeks in Class 5.
And yeah! We are finished with Class 4! Woooohoooooo! Next week I’ll update my progress reel and I’ll have a well-deserved break before I get started with the FUNNIEST term of them all! Advanced Acting! I cannot waaaaaaaaaaaait!
Pase de pulido para la toma de “Murderess”. Esta semana hemos estado retocando todos los movimientos corporales en nuestras animaciones. Principalmente, yo me he centrado en hacer el andar más natural y menos exagerado y en atar bien todo para que no hubiera demasiada “animación sucia”. Aunque los párpados, los ojos y la boca están animados un poco, es simplemente un pase muy básico ya que trabajaremos toda la animación facial las tres primeras semanas de la Clase 5.
¡Y sí! ¡Hemos acabado con la Clase 4! ¡Woooohoooooo! La semana que viene actualizaré mi progress reel y tendré un merecido descanso antes de que empecemos con el MÁS DIVERTIDO trimestre de todos. ¡Acting avanzado! ¡No puedo esperaaaaaaar!

Class 4 – Week 10

There we goooooooo! One week left to finish off this shot, which sometimes I believe that it’s looking great and some other times I hate it completely. I’m developing a very big love/hate relationship with this animation. We have been working on a SURPRISED hand pose as well.
Next week we will be quite busy because it’s the last one to finish our animation and then we’ll be done with Class 4! Next term will be very exciting! I can feel it!
¡Ahí vamos! Queda una semana para terminar esta toma, la cual a veces creo que está quedando bien y muchas otras la odio completamente. Estoy desarrollando una relación de odio/amor muy grande hacia ella. También hemos trabajado esta semana en una pose para una mano que expresara SORPRESA.
La semana que viene estaremos bastante ocupados pues es la última para finalizar nuestra animación y después habremos acabado con la Clase 4. ¡El próximo trimestre va a ser muy interesante! ¡Lo presiento!
